Stage V

Innovative solutions from KBB

Since 2019, the world’s strictest emissions regulations for “non-road vehicles” such as locomotives and inland waterway vessels have applied within the EU.

Combustion engines that fall under the provisions of EU Stage V are regulated with respect to their emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and with respect to the emitted particulate matter (PM) and number (PN).

Compliance with this regulation poses a major and complex challenge for modern exhaust aftertreatment systems.

In order to overcome the challenge of these stricter regulations, we had to supplement our SCR-System with a further component:

the diesel particulate filter (DPF). Its job is to filter diesel soot out of the exhaust gas and store this. The diesel soot collected is then burnt off in the filter at regular intervals. The KBB system has no additional components such as a gas burner or heating elements, something that has a positive effect on the availability and maintenance costs.

With this system, consisting of a diesel particulate filter and selective catalytic reduction, it is possible to comply with not only the provisions of EU Stage V but also the regulations of EPA Tier III / IV as well as China II.
